Gin is a distilled spirit drink whose predominant flavour comes from juniper berries (lat. juniperus communis). The invention of this famous spirit is attributed to the Dutch physician François de la Boe. In the 17th century he began distilling the berries to create an herbal medicine. He called it "Genever", the Dutch word for juniper berries. English soldiers, who were fighting with the Dutch against the Spanish in the Eighty Years' War, took the drink to Britain and gave it the easier name of "Gin". In the various distilleries in London, the recipes and distillation methods for the new spirit were developed and improved.
